60 hotheads disfigure football derby between Rumbeke and Roeselare: two officers slightly injured | Roeselare

RoeselareAt the football match between KSV Rumbeke and SK Roeselare-Daisel, there were clashes between supporters of the visitors and the police on Saturday evening. Two officers suffered minor injuries. “It was misery the entire match, and that during a match at this level,” says Carl Vyncke of the Riho police zone.

The fans of SK Roeselare-Daisel got ready for the city derby early in the afternoon. “They lit Bengali fire before the match,” says Carl Vyncke of the Riho police zone. “Even during the match, there was constant misery with about 60 spectators.” One supporter had also managed to smuggle Bengali fire into the stadium. When that was ignited, the police intervened and a skirmish broke out between the officers and the supporters. “Two officers suffered minor injuries. Two people have also been identified in the meantime. We will also try to identify the other people involved. We do this with images from bodycams and with the drone that was also on site. It is a great pity that such scenes have to take place in a match at this level”, concludes Vyncke.

At both clubs they nuance the skirmishes. “I have seen that there has indeed been a commotion for a few minutes,” says Geert Deblaere of SK Roeselare – Daisel. “But I didn’t even know that two officers were injured. Even after the match, it wasn’t really talked about. The match was not stopped and the referee did not include the incident in his report. We will contact the police.” Bart Wenes of KSV Rumbeke also only noticed a skirmish of a few minutes. “We had taken some measures in advance. For example, tickets were only available in advance and supporters could purchase a maximum of four tickets per person. There were no clashes between the supporters, but there were between the visiting fans and the police. That is very unfortunate, but it shows that our extra precautions are necessary.” The derby eventually ended in a scoreless draw.

Not first time

It is not the first time that SK Roeselare-Daisel supporters have shown their worst side. Last year there were also skirmishes during the game in and against Eendracht Wervik. Then 15 officers had to intervene and eventually expel the supporters from the stadium.
