In a spectacular game, Mainz 05 and TSG Hoffenheim drew 1-1. An important point for Mainz in the relegation battle.

Mainz 05 rewarded themselves for a very committed performance. Neither Hanche-Olsen’s own goal (9th) nor the red card for Dominik Kohr (88th) upset coach Bo Henriksen’s team. Da Costa secured an important point for the 05ers in the relegation battle with his goal in the 76th minute.

Oliver Baumann celebrates his 500th. Bundesliga game

As soon as kick-off kicked off, the guests from Kraichgau had reason to celebrate: more precisely, for goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, who cracked the magical mark of 500 Bundesliga games. “Yes, that’s something big. Not that many people have managed to survive and perform in the Bundesliga for so long – I’m enjoying it right now too,” Oliver Baumann said to the sports show after the game.

And the guests immediately took the initiative, Vladimir Coufal looked for the first shot after a good 30 seconds, but didn’t hit the ball properly.

Hanche-Olsen hits his own goal

In the ninth minute of the game, the rest of the Hoffenheim team also celebrated: After a cross from Wouter Burger, which was supposed to reach Fisnik Asllani, the ball from Andreas Hanche-Olsen’s head sank unstoppably over Robin Zentner and into the goal. A more than unfortunate own goal from the defender, who came into the starting line-up for Danny da Costa. Immediately afterwards, Benedict Hollerbach missed the equalizer for Mainz on the other side.

Hoffenheim is pushing for the next goal

The guests from Hoffenheim attacked Mainz early in the build-up to the game and pushed for the second goal. Asllani beat Hanche-Olsen in the 15th minute and Zentner easily parried his shot from around twelve meters. Two minutes later, a low cross from Bazoumana Touré found no taker – luck for the 05ers. The same Touré had to be treated on his knee after a duel with Phillipp Mwene, but was then able to continue playing. Grischa Prömel also failed to score the second goal for the guests from a promising position (20 meters, centrally in front of the goal) in the middle of the first half.

Mainz finds its way into the game better

In the 33rd minute of the game, the home team had some space to counterattack after a Hoffenheim corner. However, Paul Nebel took a little too long to process the ball after the four-on-four and his subsequent shot was blocked. Bo Henriksen’s team then got into the game a little better and left the guests significantly less space in their own half.

05 pressing after the break – Widmer substituted after a mouth injury

Mainz came out of the dressing room with two changes – Costa and Kawaskai came on for Maloney and Widmer, who had injured his mouth in a duel with Bernardo at the end of the first half and was unable to continue playing – and immediately tried offensive pressing. However, Hollerbach missed the right moment to finish in the Hoffenheim penalty area (47th).

A short time later, Hollerbach did better and finished on the left side of the penalty area. From an acute angle, the ball went well over Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann’s goal (55th). Three minutes later Mainz’s next chance: Mwene finished from twelve meters in a promising position – even better than Hollerbach before. His shot went just over the goal.

Ilzer changes – huge chance for Nebel

The game now seemed completely open. TSG coach Christian Ilzer tried to push his team’s offensive efforts a little more. He brought on Tim Lemperle for Andrej Kramaric (58th), who also played an active role in the game. A little later, the home team had their best chance to equalize: Hollerbach fed the completely unmarked Paul Nebel with a cross. However, his header from five meters went over the goal (65th). Nelson Weiper then came on for Jea-sung Lee.

Suddenly Lemperle asserted himself and was free in front of the Mainz goal. Zentner parried the ball, which then continued to roll towards the goal and which he was only able to scrape off the line thanks to his sprinting skills (67th) – just like da Costa, who a minute later also had to clear a ball from Lemperle behind the already beaten Zentner on the line.

Mainz defends itself and is rewarded

Mainz now pushed for the equalizer and rewarded themselves: After a corner from Nadiem Amiri, Danny da Costa was the quickest to switch because the Hoffenheim defense couldn’t clear the ball and Hollerbach didn’t hit the ball properly. The unsuccessful shot became the template for the 1-1 equalizer (76th). The guests reacted and made substitutions, Max Moerstedt came on for Touré.

Hot final phase – Kohr sees red

In an open final phase, Dominik Kohr looked after an extremely brutal one
A foul on Max Moerstedt resulted in a red card. Referee Sascha Stegemann initially showed yellow, but after checking by the VAR, he adjusted this decision due to “harmful play” and quite rightly sent Kohr off the field.

In stoppage time, events came to a head. Initially, Sano and Kawasaki on the Mainz side missed good chances for their first home win after eleven games. But the guests from Hoffenheim also had another great opportunity. Substitute Bebou even headed the ball into the goal, but referee Stegemann interrupted Hoffenheim’s celebration with a whistle. There was probably a handball in its creation. In a fast-paced game it remained a 1-1 draw.
