Staalbergven open-air swimming pool in Oisterwijk will reopen in the future. The mayor and aldermen want to allocate 5 million euros for renovation of the recreational and paddling pool. These swimming facilities have been closed since last summer. Investigation showed that there were small cracks in the pipes of the outdoor pools.
If the municipal council agrees to the council proposal, work can start in 2025. It is not known how long the job will take.
Large-scale renovation is required to make the swimming pool really attractive, it was announced last year. The recreational part normally attracts the most visitors and this is where B and W mainly want to invest. The competition pool will be removed and, according to councilor Dion Dankers, this will save 1.85 million euros. “We would prefer to renovate Staalbergven as it is now, but that is not financially feasible,” Dankers explains.
The swimming pool complex is located in the middle of the Oisterwijk forests and the council wants to take this into account with its plans. The focus is on a low-chlorine pool. Last year it was reported that an increased level of chloride had been found in the groundwater. This was a result of the cracks in the baths.
The annual costs of the baths and a new swimming pool building must be covered by the income from the sale of subscriptions and individual tickets. The municipal council will make a decision on the council plans on December 14.
Swimming in the fen is possible, if the temperature allows it. Next year, visitors can also use the sunbathing lawn, the sandy beach, the playground and the catering facility with terrace. “The sooner the work can start in 2025, the greater the chance that swimming will be possible in the recreational pool in 2025. But we certainly cannot guarantee that,” a spokesperson for the municipality said.
