Quarterback Brock Purdy deserves a lot more recognition than he gets from the public. At least this is the point of view represented by one of his well-known teammates with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL.

If fullback Kyle Juszczyk has his way, Purdy still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves despite his lucrative second contract with the 49ers. “I don’t know what else has to happen for this guy to finally get the respect that I think he really deserves,” Juszczyk recently told Jim Rome on “The Jim Rome Show” on X. “Because season after season he’s just outstanding.”

In his first four seasons in the NFL, Purdy had a 30-15 record. He completed 67.9 percent of his passes and threw for 238.5 yards and 84 touchdowns in 45 starts. He also reached the NFC Championship Game in each of his first two seasons and even the Super Bowl after the 2023 season.

In total, Purdy has already celebrated five wins in the postseason, more than Jared Goff (four), Justin Herbert (zero), Lamar Jackson (three), Daniels Jones (one), Trevor Lawrence (one), Jordan Love (one), Baker Mayfield (two) or Kyler Murray (zero), all of whom were first-round picks, while Purdy was known to be the last overall pick in the 2022 draft.

Juszczyk: “He’s exactly the right person”

From Juszczyk’s perspective, the late pick could be one of the reasons for the low public appreciation: “I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that he’s not a first-round pick. Whether that will simply remain the story of his entire career and be interpreted negatively for him? Maybe. But I love the guy – as a person, as my quarterback and as a football player. He’s exactly the right person.”

However, the 49ers did not let Purdy’s late pick dissuade him from giving him a high-paying new contract. Last year they agreed on a five-year contract extension for $265 million, of which $100 million was guaranteed upon signing.
