The court in Assen has imposed a 200-hour community service for a 43-year-old man from Nieuwe Pekela for the many years of abuse of his girlfriend and the mother of his children.

The abuse would have happened between 2012 and 2021 in Schoonoord, Zwiggelte and Odoornerveen. The man denies that he systematically abused her. “It was not a rose scent and moonshine, but it wasn’t that bad.”

The woman stated that the violence lasted for years and that the suspect ensured, among other things, that she became blind to her left eye. The court does not consider the latter to be proven.

The court does count the suspect “heavily on” that the man with his behavior “seriously suffering” has applied to the woman. “All this took place in and around the marital home, a place that should have been safe for the victim.”

The court found it not desirable to impose a prison sentence, partly because the man is partly concerned about his children and that of his new partner.
