3rd league: VfL Osnabrück suffers their first defeat of the season against Ingolstadt

Status: 08/10/2022 8:59 p.m

Third division soccer team VfL Osnabrück was hit for the first time on the third day of the season. The purple-whites lost 1-0 (0-1) to FC Ingolstadt 04 on Wednesday evening.

After the 1-1 draw at FC Erzgebirge Aue, VfL coach Daniel Scherning’s team had nothing to count in the second game of the English week – it was a disappointing performance. On Saturday it goes to the newly promoted SpVgg Bayreuth. In the table, VfL is in the middle with four points.

Röhl shocked purple and white

It didn’t go really well for Lower Saxony from the start. First, after just 80 seconds, a shot by Marc Heider was just a few centimeters away from the lead – and instead of a possible 1-0, it was 0-1 a little later. Merlin Röhl shot in from the left side of the penalty area into the back corner to lead the Schanzer (0:1). In addition, after a tackle by Dominik Franke against Heider, the guests were allowed to continue playing at full strength. The stepping in of the FCI defender could also have been rated as an “emergency brake” (10th).

The purple-whites didn’t do much offensively in the further course of the first half. In the end, they could even be happy that it “only” went into the break with a 0-1 draw. Ingolstadt had good opportunities through Pascal Testroet (30′) and Calvin Brackelmann, who was born in Lüneburg – his header hit the crossbar (36′).

Osnabrück only dangerous in injury time

Even after the restart, the North Germans just didn’t get going. And so time passed. In the 71st minute, the hosts were lucky that it wasn’t 0:2. After a sharp pass in the middle of the penalty area, Röhl and Testroet narrowly missed the ball. Nothing came of Osnabrück. The Schanzer was different: Substitute Dane Tobias Bech hit the post (85th). And then there were still two top chances for the purple-whites: Erik Engelhardt failed at FCI keeper Marius Funk (90+3) and Emeka Oduah with a header on the crossbar (90+5). VfL woke up way too late.
