TSV 1860 Munich has reacted to the ongoing failures this season and placed coach Argirios Giannikis on leave. The Giesingers announced this on Monday. For the 44-year-old, his time with the Lions ends after just one year.
Argirios Giannikis is no longer the coach of TSV 1860 Munich. The club announced this on Monday. The 44-year-old’s ongoing failure was his downfall. The Lions have been waiting for a win for three games and have now slipped to 14th place in the table. This is how Löwen managing director Christian Werner justified the dismissal on the club’s homepage: “Agi Giannikis took over the Lions last season after a series of defeats, stabilized the team and ultimately led them to stay in the league. In the current season, however, the team is now behind Expectations fell short.”
Saarbrücken bankruptcy crucial
The decisive factor is the embarrassing one 0:4 defeat in Saarbrücken in which the team surrendered to their fate at half-time: “Based on the impressions from the game in Saarbrücken, I decided, with the involvement of the committees and both shareholders, to provide new impetus by changing the coaching team in order to ensure a successful second half of the season “I would like to thank Agi for his dedicated commitment to TSV 1860 Munich, for a very pleasant collaboration and wish him only the best for the future,” said Werner.
Worst start to the season for Sixty in the 3rd league ever
TSV 1860 Munich started the new season with high hopes and a completely revamped squad. But the euphoria quickly disappeared after the first performances. The Lions initially delivered one of the most worrying performances against newly promoted Stuttgart II. Sixty experienced a debacle in Swabia, which was only not reflected in the result of 1:3. The The team hasn’t come together yet, it all takes timecoach Giannikis had to publicly state.
But also in third game of the season at home against Viktoria Cologne worked little. Here too there was a 1:3 defeat and a shrill concert of whistles from the stands. The defeat could have been worse, after which clear calls of “coach out” could be heard in the Grünwald stadium.
Hope after derby victory in Ingolstadt and Wiesn-Hoch
The team gave the right answer and won surprisingly but deservedly with a 2-1 win at promotion hopefuls FC Ingolstadt. Little by little the team seemed to have collected itself and emerged victorious in the games against Bielefeld, Hannover II and Dortmund II. The lion has since said goodbye to the relegation zone.
But appearances were deceptive, TSV 1860 found itself in acute relegation trouble again after major defeats in Cottbus (1:5), against Verl (0:4), Aue (1:3) and Saarbrücken (0:4). Before the basement duel against Stuttgart II next Saturday, TSV is only four points ahead of the relegation zone. That’s why those responsible now felt compelled to release Giannikis.
Devastating results under coach Giannikis
The 44-year-old football teacher took over the Lions in January last year during a relegation battle. His start could hardly have gone better. TSV remained unbeaten in the first eight games (five wins, three draws). During this time, Giannikis was one of the most successful coaches in Europe. The Sixty took the following four defeats but quickly back down to earth. At the end of the season the class was ranked 15th.
The Lions had set themselves high goals for the new season and definitely didn’t want to have anything to do with relegation. The traditional club only achieved seven wins in twenty third division games, and the average points tally of just 1.20 points was also no longer an argument for continuing to employ the German-Greek.
It is not yet clear who will succeed Giannikis at Grünwalder Straße 144.
