Even the starting position for Duisburg seemed unpromising. While the HFC started the new year with a 3-1 win, the MSV lost 1-4 at 1860. In addition, captain Sebastian Mai tore a cruciate ligament and will be out until the end of the season.

Duisburg’s new arrivals are convincing

But true to the motto “those who were declared dead live longer”, the people of Duisburg started off energetically and highly motivated in the pouring rain. In particular, the two new additions Daniel Ginczek and Ahmet Engin knew how to please – unlike their anemic appearance in Munich.

Ginczek then had the first great chance, but his shot failed after nine minutes due to a strong punch from HFC keeper Philipp Schulze. Shortly afterwards, new signing number two made things better: After a great pass from Niklas Kölle, Engin only had to push the ball into the goal from close range (15th).

However, the leadership did not bring security. On the contrary. Halle was suddenly more present and did more for the offensive. This was rewarded after 27 minutes with a free kick goal by Timur Gayret to equalize.

But unlike in so many games before, this only shocked the guests for a short time. Just five minutes later they were back in front – once again it was the strong Engin who pushed the ball over the line.

Red card the beginning of the end

The second half didn’t go so well for MSV, who were down to ten men from the 59th minute onwards. Joshua Bitter hit Tarsis Bonga from behind and was shown red. Halle took advantage of the advantage and equalized again after 76 minutes.

Substitute Robin Müller had another chance to give Duisburg the lead again after 83 minutes, but he missed it. After that, the MSV collapsed completely. In the 86th minute, the crossbar saved the draw for the Zebras, but two minutes later it was done: Joker Erich Berko’s shot initially failed to hit the post, but Jonas Nietfeld then maneuvered the rebound into the goal.

The Duisburg team never recovered from this shock and in the end they were even happy that they didn’t lose even more. Because Tunay Deniz also hit the post shortly before the end. It’s a very bitter defeat for MSV, who were clearly the better team until the red card.
