Dynamo Dresden goes into the second half of the season as leaders. The SGD is six points ahead of the relegation place, last season it was even seven at the same time – and yet the SGD missed the jump into the 2nd Bundesliga. SPORT IM EAST gives reasons why the promotion worked this time.

1. Lessons from last season

The mistake from last year should not be repeated. Last season, Dynamo were second at halftime, seven points ahead of the relegation place and still lost promotion in the end. Nobody thought that was possible at the time. The bitter experience could now be a blessing, because this time no one will pat themselves on the back until the goal is reached. The undoubtedly good first half of the season cannot be overrated. Dynamo is sensitized and should sharpen the senses until the end.

2. The team works

Dynamo Dresden is broadly positioned, many positions are twice as well filled. The climate suits this. “The atmosphere is really good. Everyone is pitching in, everyone is up for it, everyone is putting their foot down,” says youngster Tony Menzel SPORT IM EAST. Above all, the mix in the team of experienced players and our own young players was a plus in the first half of the season and had a positive effect. “Perhaps it is this homogeneity that will take us further this year than last year,” estimates Sport Managing Director Sport Thomas Brendel a.

3. Dynamo defies adversity

Dynamo did not allow themselves to be devastated by setbacks and showed great morale. In total, the SGD got twelve points (three wins and three draws) after falling behind and often scored in stoppage time. It’s not just luck, but above all skill and the belief in points. The 3:3 against Rot-Weiß Essen is emblematic of the dynamo’s hard work. We were behind three times and came back three times. This game showed how intact the team is. Previously, there had been heavy criticism after the 1:2 in the league against Borussia Dortmund II and the exit in the Saxony Cup against Chemnitzer FC. Dynamo shook themselves and defied the odds.

4. The boys are Achievers

For years, the Dynamo Dresden professional team was looking for homegrown players in vain. This season it’s different. Tony Menzel (19) and Jonas Oehmichen (20) have made the jump from the youth ranks and are top performers in the third division team. The advantage of young people: their performance potential increases (mostly), while older players have reached their limit.

The fact that Menzel (4 goals, 2 assists) and Oehmichen (3 goals, 1 assist) are true Dresdeners rounds things off. With Paul Lehmann (20) and 17-year-old Dmytro Bogdanov, two more talents are part of the squad. This is a sign for all young players, but also for the club: the boys from our own squad can make the leap and identify even more with the SGD than talents from abroad.

5. Coach Thomas Stamm

Coach Thomas Stamm is a young coach, but not stubborn, but flexible. When he realized that the system he had tried to impose on the team in late summer wasn’t working, he returned to the back four. The 41-year-old was already shaping talent during his time in Freiburg and is now doing the same in Florence on the Elbe. He knows the 3rd league inside out, but trained in Breisgau almost behind closed doors. He quickly got used to the “wind” in Dresden and developed further as a trainer.

And…

…. also it’s finally Dynamo’s turn. This summer marks the 30th anniversary of relegation from the 1st Bundesliga. At the time, no one around the Black and Yellows believed that the road back would be so rocky. A return to the 2nd Bundesliga in the summer of 2025 would be balm and a nice (intermediate) step.
