3rd League: Next setback in the relegation battle: Mannheim loses to Dresden

As of: January 23, 2024 8:59 p.m

On the 22nd matchday of the 3rd league, SV Waldhof Mannheim lost against Dynamo Dresden. After the defeat against the provisional new league leaders, the Waldhöfer are still deeply stuck in the relegation battle.

Next setback in the fight against relegation: In the duel between the two traditional clubs, SV Waldhof Mannheim lost 0:2 (0:1) against Dynamo Dresden. In front of 12,514 spectators in the Carl Benz Stadium, the relegation-threatened Waldhof fell behind with an own goal from Bentley Baxter Bahn in the 45th minute. In the 61st minute, Lucas Cueto increased the lead to 2-0 for Dynamo. With the win, Dresden temporarily climbs to the top of the table. Mannheim slips to 18th place in the table.

Mannheim starts well and initially meets Dresden on an equal footing

Waldhof coach Rüdiger Rehm changed his team compared to 1:2 defeat at VfB Lübeck in one position: Winter newcomer Kevin Goden started on the right wing instead of Kelvin Arase. Dresden’s coach Markus beginning left the starting lineup the same as before 0:1 against Sandhausen.

The game got off to a fast start and Terrence Boyd had the first goal in his 100th third division game after just three minutes. But his shot from a tight angle was too harmless and Dynamo keeper Kevin Broll parried safely. Dresden also started forward with a lot of momentum and created their best chance so far in the 13th minute: after a strong cross from Jakob Lemmer, Luca Herrmann headed the ball free from seven meters. However, he was too out of place, so Waldhof’s goalkeeper Lucien Hawryluk was able to secure the ball in the follow-up.

Dynamo increases the pressure and takes the lead shortly before half-time

In a hard-fought game, the favorite from Dresden had more possession of the ball and had better chances in the first half hour, but the Waldhof acted wide awake and met the promotion aspirants on an equal footing. Thanks to a quick transition game, Mannheim were also able to repeatedly create small pinpricks.

In the final minutes of the first half, the second-place team increased the pressure and took the lead shortly before half-time with Bahn’s own goal (45th). After a corner from Lemmer, the ball sailed through the Waldhof penalty area, where Zimmerschied was lurking at the far post, but couldn’t get to the ball in a duel with Bahn. Instead, it jumped onto Bahn’s calf and rolled from there into his own goal. Keeper Hawryluk supposedly scratched the ball out, but the full extent of the ball was already behind the line.

Cueto increases for Dresden

After the break, Waldhof started well, as in the first section. In the 54th minute the hosts even had a great chance to equalize. But Boyd’s header from five meters sailed a few centimeters past the goal.

After an hour, the Rehm team was lucky that referee Michael Bacher did not award a penalty after a handball by Marcel Seegert in the penalty area. The people of Dresden initially protested, but were not deterred by the decision. Instead, substitute Cueto increased it to 2-0 for Dynamo just a minute later: The Dresden striker’s actually harmless shot became dangerous for Hawryluk because Stefan Kutschke and Malte Karbstein tried to intervene directly in front of him. In the end no one touched the ball and it hit the goal unfortunately from Mannheim’s perspective (61′).

In the final phase, Waldhof coach Rehm tried to increase the pressure on Dynamo with a triple substitution. But the substitutes Charles-Isaiah Herrmann, Tim Sechelmann and Arase also found no remedy against the well-positioned Dresden players. So it remained 0:2, which further worsened Mannheim’s relegation worries.
