3rd league: MSV Duisburg scoreless against Meppen at the bottom

Disappointment for MSV Duisburg on the 24th matchday of the third division: Despite a sometimes oppressive superiority, it was not enough to win against bottom team SV Meppen.

MSV, placed twelfth in the table, so to speak, had planned a dominant appearance against the bottom of the league. They wanted to dominate the opponent in a playful way and finally spoil the fans who flocked to the stadium in the cold and drizzle with football that was reasonably nice to watch.

Combat and action on deep ground

But nothing came of it at first. Because SV Meppen started the game surprisingly offensive and courageous and hardly gave the hosts any space. And because the lawn of the stadium on the Wedau was extremely deep and increasingly muddy.

Fighting and commitment was soon the trump card – and here both teams were initially on an equal footing. Both toiled, fought and got on each other’s feet – scoring chances hardly spanned out. To be more precise: Not a single really dangerous one in the first half.

Duisburg’s Moritz Stoppelkamp perhaps had two half-chances: in the 25th minute he fired just wide of the post from long range, and almost ten minutes later he forced the guest keeper to make a save and follow-up with another long-range shot. That was all.

MSV dominant but not mandatory

It didn’t get any better in the second half either. The MSV pushed the guests even more on the defensive, but despite the sometimes oppressive superiority, there were hardly any compelling chances to score. Again and again the last pass was too inaccurate or opportunities that arose were missed far too carelessly. So it ended up being a goalless draw, which actually only somehow satisfied SV Meppen.

On the next matchday, MSV has to play away at VfB Oldenburg. Kick-off is on Sunday (05.03.23) at 2 p.m.
