Exclamation mark in the 3rd football league: Borussia Dortmund’s second representation beat second-placed SSV Jahn Regensburg.

On Wednesday (January 24th, 2024), BVB retained three points in a 1-0 (0-0) win in Dortmund. At first nothing came of the game, but Ole Pohlmann then broke the spell with a hand penalty (67′). Regensburg slipped to second place due to the defeat and had to let Dresden pass. Dortmund increased its own points account to 32 and moved up to eighth place.

Lean first half: BVB and SSV without ideas

The first half was difficult footballing fare. Borussia Dortmund’s youngsters could at least be credited with the fact that they kept the Regensburg offensive in a disciplined manner and hardly allowed anything to happen.

However, this also applied to SSV Jahn, who had only conceded 18 goals up to that point – a league record, together with Dynamo Dresden. Neither Dortmund’s Marcel Lotka nor Regensburg’s Alexander Weidinger were really tested as goalkeepers.

Pohlmann breaks the spell with a hand penalty

BVB coach Jan Zimmermann then made two changes in the second half: Mateu Morey and Samuel Bamba made way for Julian Hettwer and Patrick Göbel (46th). As a result, the game at least picked up a little more momentum – on both sides. Lotka had no problems with Benedikt Saller’s long-range shot (50th).

Dortmund’s Pohlmann then broke the spell with a hand penalty. Previously, Rodney Elongo-Yombo had pulled a shot towards the far corner and Louis Breunig directed the ball onto the post with his arm.

That certainly gave Borussia momentum. Once again it was Pohlmann who, a little later, forced Regensburg goalkeeper Weidinger to do a brilliant deed from close range (69′). And Weidinger later saved again from a double chance for BVB, Pohlmann and Moses Otuali failed with their shots (83′). Dortmund’s victory could have been even higher.

BVB II has to travel to league leaders Dresden

On the 23rd matchday, Borussia’s reserves have to Dortmund solve a tricky task at SG Dynamo Dresden (Sunday, 7.30 p.m.) – Dresden, as league leaders, is the hottest candidate for promotion.
