Today we review Hot Chip’s seventh album FREAKOUT/RELEASE, Phoebe Green’s debut album LUCKY ME and Sophia Blenda’s DIE NEUE HEERERKEIT.

Hot Chip FREAKOUT/RELEASE’s seventh record has two sources of inspiration: Chic’s ’70s hit “Le Freak” and the Pet Shop Boys’ “Release” record. That fits: Like the Pet Shop Boys, Hot Chip have so far achieved the feat of never having presented an album that wasn’t at least very good.

Phoebe Green explores her inner contradictions, dysfunctional behavior and mental health on her debut album. As simple as the melodies and as charming as the mixture of pop and electronica seem, the lyrics by the musician from Manchester are just as genuine.

The lyrics on Sophia Blenda’s debut album DIE NEUE HEITERKEIT are poetic and political at the same time, she shows herself with bared teeth and yet full of tenderness. The musician, whose real name is Sophia Löw, creates her very own sound art with mainly piano chords and strings.
