Waldhof Mannheim must again cope with a defeat outnumbered. Against VfB Stuttgart II, a lot of bad luck was involved.
Julian Lüers decided the game in added time with a crashed half-field flank. Waldhof Mannheim had to come to terms with a bitter 0-1 defeat against VfB Stuttgart II. For Mannheim it was the second home defeat within three days, but a small liberation for Stuttgart.
Waldhof Mannheim with the better chances
“Marble, stone and iron breaks, but our forest courtyard,” sang the Waldhof-Mannheim fans the 0: 3 defeat against Energie Cottbus. And so on Wednesday more than 8,659 fans came to the Carl-Benz Stadium to cheer SV Waldhof against VfB Stuttgart II. They saw a brisk game in which both teams tried to take off-do football and pleased, but without igniting the very large chance fireworks.
The Stuttgart did not play their attacks consistently enough to ensure the risk of scoring. The scene was symbolic in the 17th minute, when Christopher Olivier prevailed on the right side against Sascha Voelcke, which the ball played his team -mate Nicolas Sessa so far in the back that he could only get a shot on laying. Waldhof Mannheim was much more dangerous. Because Felix Lohkemper missed the sharp cross pass by Julian Rieckmann by centimeter (19th) and a little later on VfB-II goalkeeper Dominik Draband (28th), the break was 0-0.
Mannheim first superior and then outnumbered
In the second half, the Mannheimers saw an urge phase of their boys: Lohkemper from Halbrechts (46.), Masca from the rotation (47th), Nicklas Shipnoski with his goal shot (54.) and again Masca after a wonderful steep pass from Adama Diakhaby (60th). However, there was nothing to cheer. And so it came, as so often in the current season: Waldhof Mannheim weakened: Stuttgart countered that Sessa ran alone towards Mannheimer Tor and the already warned Waldhof defender Tim Sechelmann knew how to help himself than tear down as Sessa. The logical consequence: yellow-red (61.). It was the third dismissal in the sixth game – the second for Sechelmann.
Waldhof goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis was surprised by Julian Lüer’s Support half-field flank in injury time.
It was the end of the Mannheim urge phase. However, the new power ratio did not ring in a urge to urge the Stuttgart. Essentially, VfB’s opportunities were reduced to a counterattack by Mohamed Sankoh (67th) and Leny Meyers spacer shot (84th). The Stuttgart team trained by Nico Willig – above all dribbel king Noah Darvich – remained the more active team, but that did not change the lack of precision. But then Lüer’s’ lucky shot hit the Hannheimer, which had been well defended until then, in the heart. Its flank from about 30 meters lowered exactly into the angle. Waldhof goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis was surprised, but without a chance. So there was no choice in the 0-1 and the Mannheim fans than to go on: “Everything, everything goes over, but we are loyal to you.”
