Hamburg (dpa) – Hamburger SV won the spectacular north showdown against Hannover 96 and has at least temporarily moved to a promotion spot.

Hamburg defeated Lower Saxony 2-1 (2-1) on Saturday and is now second in the 2nd Bundesliga. Hamburg now have 57 points, just like Darmstadt 98 in third place and Werder Bremen in fourth place. Darmstadt lost 2-1 at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday. Bremen only plays at FC Erzgebirge Aue this Sunday.

Robert Glatzel put the hosts in the Volkspark ahead early on. The striker scored in the 13th and 20th minutes. Hamburg is in top form just in time for the end of the season. HSV has now won four league games in a row. Sebastian Kerk scored the goal for Hannover (22nd) in a very fast-paced game in which both teams had numerous chances.

“We threw ourselves in until the end,” said Hamburg’s captain Sebastian Schonlau on Sky. “We should have closed the game earlier, but in the end it doesn’t matter. We won.” A few weeks ago, the Hamburgers had already been written off in the promotion race. “It’s football. Anything goes in football. You just can’t predict anything,” said Schonlau. His motto is now: “Start the new week with fun and energy and then we’ll see what’s up.”

FC Hansa Rostock, who had already been rescued, played 0-0 at FC Ingolstadt, who were relegated. 1. FC Heidenheim won 2-0 (1-0) at SSV Jahn Regensburg. Patrick Mainka gave Heidenheim the lead in the 51st minute. Tobias Mohr made the decision half an hour later. Also the day before, SC Paderborn beat SV Sandhausen 2-0 (1-0).
