2nd Bundesliga: Cleared SV Wehen Wiesbaden dupes SV Elversberg

SV Wehen Wiesbaden has taken an important step in the fight to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. In the promoted duel at SV Elversberg, Wiesbaden’s match plan worked particularly well in the second half.

In the end there was a deserved 3-0 (1-0) on the scoreboard on Sunday (March 3rd, 2024), which Elversberg’s coach Horst Steffen scored with a “used day” from his team’s point of view. Thijmen Goppel (44th), Hyun-ju Lee (49th) and John Iredale (84th) each scored notable goals for SVWW. With the win, Wiesbaden now has 30 points and is in 13th place. Elversberg slips down to eleventh place (32 points).

Goppel makes the difference: SVE surprised by the counterattack

It was an even and tough affair right from the start. The SVE gradually gained over 60 percent of the ball possession and made an effort to actively play forward. However, the guests from Wiesbaden had the first good chance of the game: Franko Kovacevic missed from the edge of the penalty area (6th).

Elversberg coach Steffen was then forced to make a change due to an injury. Left-back Arne Sicker had to go out injured because he had sprained his ankle. Offensive man Joseph Boyamba came in for him (25th). The SVE then acted with a three-man chain in which Boyamba plowed the wing.

The difference in the intensive and combative first half was ultimately made by a strong counterattack by SVWW shortly before the break. Lasse Günther sent Goppel on his way, Elversberg had moved up too far. The Dutchman was able to start from his own half. The lightning-fast Boyamba still put the turbo in, but was no longer able to make a decisive impact. Goppel went around Elversberg’s goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof and pushed in.

Lee’s dream goal puts SVWW on the road to victory

And the momentum remained on the guests’ side. Wehen Wiesbaden stepped up early after the restart – and how. Lee shot the ball centrally in front of the penalty area into the corner to make it 2-0, nothing to hold on to for Kristof.

SVE coach Steffen reacted, sending Dominik Martinovic into the game for Paul Stock (52nd), thus opting for a more offensive orientation. But Wehen did it cleverly, continued to work in a disciplined manner in defense, allowed little and continued to cause a sensation up front.

Elversberg in the end without resistance

Ivan Prtajin made it 3-0 after a cross from Lee (63′), Martin Angha’s shot from close range was disallowed due to an offside position (70′). Elversberg’s Robin Fellhauer also cleared a header from Aleksandar Vukotic (77′).

The SVE, on the other hand, no longer found a way to put up any serious resistance – instead Iredale made it 3-0 with a tight finish after strong dribbling.

Wiesbaden welcomes H96, Elversberg travels to Fürth

On the next 25th matchday, Wehen Wiesbaden has a home game against a promotion candidate. Then Hannover 96 will be a guest at SVWW (Saturday, March 9, 2024, 1 p.m.). SV Elversberg has to play against SpVgg Greuther Fürth (Sunday, 1.30 p.m.).
