24-hour strike in Belgian prisons “very noticeable”: prison directors call for three measures to tackle overcrowding

Prison directors have presented the Minister of Justice Paul Van Tigchelt (Open Vld) with three measures to resolve the impasse in the prison system. Since Thursday evening (10 p.m.) a 24-hour strike has been going on in Belgian prisons out of dissatisfaction with overcrowding and the increasing number of cases of aggression. The target figure for minimum occupancy was also not achieved in three quarters of the establishments. To deal with the undercapacity of staff, police have been requisitioned in almost all institutions.
