After a messed up second division season, 1. FC Nürnberg is planning a new start. Cristian Fiél will be on the bench as head coach. The previous U23 coach of Nuremberg already has experience in the second division.

1. FC Nürnberg is making its previous U23 coach Cristian Fiél head coach. The 43-year-old sat on the sidelines with the FCN pros for the last few months of last season, alongside interim coach Dieter Hecking, who is now concentrating on his duties as director of sport. Fiél will lead his first training session for FCN on June 20, according to the club’s announcement.

Hecking has every confidence in Fíel

Dieter Hecking, Sport Director at 1. FC Nürnberg, says about the promotion of his previous assistant coach: “In Cristian Fiél we can look forward to a committed and meticulous head coach. He follows a clear game philosophy, which he has already successfully implemented in the U23s Cristian has the right mix of experience, emotional appeal and football expertise.”

Olaf Rebbe, sports director of 1. FC Nürnberg, adds: “Cristian has left his footprint on our U23s and in the last few months as an assistant coach with the pros. He knows about the development potential of the club and with his positive nature and content-related conviction give a fresh impetus. His big advantage is that he has known the players from the club and especially the NLZ for a long time.”

The new man in the head coaching post seems to be aware of his great responsibility: “First of all, it is important for me to thank those responsible for the trust they have placed in me,” Fiél is quoted as saying on the club’s website. “I feel great anticipation for this challenge and have a great desire to tackle this task with great commitment.”

Fiél stands for attractive football

With Fiél, the club is now planning upheaval. The German-Spaniard has already coached Dynamo Dresden in the 2nd Bundesliga and is known for attractive attacking football. Accordingly, those responsible in Nuremberg are sticking to the playful approach, which did not bring the hoped-for success last season. Despite many offensive powers, goals at the club were often in short supply, and the desired points were often missing, which is why 1. FC Nürnberg until the last day of the game worried about staying up had to.

Contract with ex-coach Klauss dissolved

It was not until Thursday evening that FCN announced via Twitter that the contract with ex-coach Robert Klauß had been terminated by mutual agreement. Klauß was relieved of his duties at the beginning of October 2022 after more than two years at the club, but was still on the payroll of the always financially strapped 1. FC Nürnberg.
