German football mourns Dieter Herzog. The 1974 world champion died this week at the age of 79. This was first announced by his long-time club Bayer Leverkusen, for whom he was active as a footballer from 1976 until the end of his career in 1983. He then worked as a scout for the Werkself for around three decades.

Herzog was used in Germany’s 1974 World Cup triumph in the two group games against Yugoslavia (2-0) and Sweden (4-2). He made a total of five appearances for the German national team. At club level, the Oberhausen native played the most games for Fortuna Düsseldorf: 247. He scored 78 goals and 17 assists. In addition to Fortuna and Bayer Leverkusen, Herzog also played for Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 and VfB Bottrop.
