The finals will return to the Rhine-Ruhr region next summer. Like North Rhine-Westphalia SportsState Secretary Andrea Milz confirmed on Tuesday that the multisport event will be held from July 6th to 9th, 2023 at seven sports venues in Düsseldorf and Duisburg. The German championship titles are awarded in 18 sports.
“With the finals, a wonderful multi-sports event is coming back to the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. We are happy to give top-class German sport a big stage,” said Milz in the opening speech at the SPOBIS sports business congress in Düsseldorf. ARD and ZDF will again broadcast the event live.
Four locations in Düsseldorf
The state capital Düsseldorf will be represented with four locations: taekwondo, judo and table tennis will be held in the multifunctional hall Castello, triathlon in the media harbor, 3×3 basketball on the Burgplatz as well as apparatus gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline gymnastics in the multifunctional hall Dome. The sports facility for archery is still open.
Boxing and the dance sport of breaking (breakdance) take place in the Kraftzentrale in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park. The blast furnace square and the bunker forecourt are intended for climbing and BMX. In canoe and canoe polo, the champions are determined in the inner harbor of Duisburg.
Berlin will be suspended as a venue in 2023
The finals had their successful premiere in Berlin in 2019. The event planned for 2020 in North Rhine-Westphalia was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021 the Rhine-Ruhr region shared the role of host with Berlin. In 2022, the German capital was again the sole organizer.
The German championships in athletics will be held as part of the 2023 finals in Kassel. The German championships in swimming and diving will also take place as part of the finals, the location will be announced.
