1. FC Kaiserslautern has given homegrown player Owen Gibs a new contract. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder, whose working paper originally expired, is now tied to the second division club on a “long-term basis,” as the FCK announced. Gibs has been training with the Red Devils since 2017 and made his professional debut in December last year. Since then there have been two more appearances, but he is mostly active for the second team.
“Over the past year, Owen has taken a step forward, especially physically, and has therefore increasingly shown his undisputed footballing potential on the pitch. We look forward to further supporting his development and supporting him on his next steps at Betzenberg. With the decision to offer him a long-term contract and to show him a perspective at FCK, we are once again underlining our claim to enable the top talents from our own youth to make the leap into professional football,” said sports director Marcel Klos.
Gibs, who comes from neighboring Landstuhl, explained: “As a boy from the region, it was of course always my dream to play for the FCK professionals at Betzenberg, especially after my brother Neal made his debut for the Red Devils in the 3rd league. I am very grateful that I too have been given the opportunity to play my first games for FCK in the 2nd Bundesliga and will continue to work hard for my dream.”
