Friedhelm Funkel is said to lead 1st FC Köln to the Bundesliga in the two final season games. But who takes over in summer?

Friedhelm Funkel returns to the 1. FC Köln again. The 71-year-old is supposed to lead the battered second division team through the last two season games and interfere with the coaching position of Gerhard Struber, as the club confirmed on Monday. Funkel receives a contract until the end of the season.

For the experienced football teacher, it is already the third stop among the Cologne: from 2002 to 2003 and 2021 he already looked after the traditional club. Three years ago, he saved the team from the Bundesliga about the relegation before relegation. Funkel is also a record promoter among the German trainers – he led six clubs to the upper house in his career.

But Funkel should not stay beyond the summer. According to information from RTL/N-TV and “Sport.de”, Urs Fischer is a hot candidate for the coaching position for the new season. The former Union coach had already signaled the club to be available-but only in the event of an ascent.

Fischer led Union Berlin to the Bundesliga in 2019 and then even established the team at a European level. Since his separation from Union in November 2023, the 59-year-old has been without a club. At 1. FC Köln he could start a new building in the upper house in the event of ascent.
