Zr.Ms. Tromp will leave Den Helder as flagship for the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1). This is 1 of 4 NATO fleets that is available 24/7 for NATO missions. What is special is that a Dutch commander will command the maritime group throughout 2025.

Commander Arjen Warnaar will take over command of SNMG1 from Danish commodore Thomas Stig Rasmussen on January 9. This happens at the Haakonsvern naval base in Norway.

Safety at sea

SNMG1 is a group of ships from NATO countries. The fleet is there to deter and monitor and maintain safety in maritime areas. This is done, among other things, through patrols and by participating in operations.

The composition of the fleet varies. The Netherlands supplies several naval vessels and staff members that support Commander Warnaar.
The ships are part of the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force.

NH90 maritime attack helicopter

Zr.Ms. Tromp is one of the 4 air defense and command frigates of the De Zeven Provinciën class. These ships can protect an entire fleet against enemy threats. Think of attacks with aircraft and missiles.

Zr.Ms. Tromp is equipped with an NH90 maritime combat helicopter from the Defense Helicopter Command.
