In his speech in the Lower House, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zensky warned on Tuesday for a Russian attack on NATO territory and called for new sanctions against Russia.
It is the third time that Zensky addresses the Lower House. The first time was shortly after the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and in May 2023 Zelensky spoke to the States General in the Senate.
Now Zensky actually spoke in the Lower House. At the start of his speech, he expressed his gratitude for Dutch support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian president also warned that both the Ukrainian and Dutch intelligence services think “that Russia is preparing hostile and possibly destructive actions in NATO territory.”
Price ceiling of 30 dollars
In order to stop the war in Ukraine and to prevent an attack on other European countries, Russia must be ‘maximum isolated’, says Zensky. He called on the EU to present a strong new sanction package, in which, among other things, the price ceiling of Russian oil is limited to 30 dollars per barrel.
That price ceiling is now at $ 60 per barrel. Above that price it is forbidden to ensure Russian oil transports. In its most recent sanction package, the EU wanted to lower the price ceiling to $ 45 per barrel, but saw Right earlier this week. At the moment, Hungary and Slovakia are still across the negotiations on the (weakened) sanction package.
Zensky also said that long -term defense support of the West on Ukraine is also crucial for bringing peace. “Russia must see that Ukraine is not left alone and that Europe is not deflecting,” said the Ukrainian president.
The Ukrainian president arrived in the Netherlands on Monday and previously spoke with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. In retrospect, Rutte said that this was “a good conversation,” there he again expressed his support for more deliveries to Ukraine.
