After years of waiting, the redevelopment of the silos on Zeeburgereiland has finally started. Previous plans to convert the silos, which used to be part of the sewage treatment plant, were canceled. The Sportheldenbuurt has developed around the silos in recent years. Because the municipality did not want the silos to be demolished, it organized a competition. But subsequent grand plans ultimately did not get off the ground.

Ultimately, a good party was found, says district director Jan-Bert Vroege. “But then we had to deal with different crises again,” he says. Construction has now started and it is already easy to see what it should look like in the new situation.

Silo 1, 2 and 3

“We usually call them S1, S2 and S3, or also West, Middle and East,” says project developer Jurgen Dingemans. Each silo will soon have its own character. For example, the Rialto film house in the Westsilo will soon open its doors, with five cinema halls, a café and a rooftop bar. The Middensilo will become the domain of the Silo gym, with additional space for catering and flexible workplaces. There will be catering establishments with terraces in the Oostsilo.
