ZDFinfo has announced a documentary series of the same name about Neue Deutsche Welle. Katja Herr and Heike Sittner took over the script and direction. In it, various protagonists and participants of the genre and the movement, which celebrated its greatest successes from 1981 to 1984, have their say. From the early underground music in the punk scene to the most successful German popular music, the mini-series wants to explain the transformation of the Neue Deutsche Welle.

Between standstill and oversupply

“It was stagnant and a whole new field opened up through punk. The whole youth culture, which used to be rebellious, like in the sixties, early seventies. She became more and more stuffy like her parents. And there was punk. And then the new wave. A rebellion against it that somehow opened up new avenues,” journalist and producer Hollow Skai is quoted as saying from the first of the three parts. “The industry contributed to the oversupply. And then the oversupply was like a saturated solution,” criticizes music producer Thomas Stein, on the other hand, the development of the genre in the last episode. The two filmmakers also have a personal connection to the subject: “In the early 1980s, one of us was traveling around Magdeburg and Berlin as a popper with net shirts and popper curls. The other as a hobby punk with jacket and razor blade earrings in Karl-Marx-Stadt, today Chemnitz, on tour. NDW was definitely the music of our own youth.”

In addition, Joachim Witt, Peter Hain von Fehlfarben, Robert Görl from DAF, Jürgen Ehle from the GDR band Pankow, Reinhold Heil from the Nina Hagen Band, Ideal founding member Ernst Ulrich Deuker and Jim Rocket, among others, look back on the decade.

The three episodesThe Pioneers“, “the hype” and “The Overkill“ will be on Easter Sunday (9 April) from 8:15 p.m aired. From March 26th they are already over the media library available.
