An interview became a moving moment. ZDF reporter Thomas Skulski said goodbye live on television.
A few moments after the top Bundesliga game between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund, the focus was briefly not on the sporting events, but on a special farewell: Thomas Skulski conducted his last interview on the ZDF program “Aktuelles Sportstudio” – with BVB coach Niko Kovač.
The background: Bayern had previously won the German classic in Munich 2-1 and thus extended their lead at the top of the table over Dortmund to seven points. The defeat meant that BVB fell back to fourth place in the table, and RB Leipzig is now the first pursuer, five points behind the German record champions.
After the game, Kovač was available to ZDF for an interview. Presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein emotionally announced that it was Skulski’s last appearance on the show: “This man here is making his last appearance in the current sports studio. Thomas Skulski, a long-time valued colleague in the ZDF sports editorial team, is doing his last interview in the evening game this evening. Show us what you can do again, Thomas.”
A picture from 1992 appeared on the screen – Skulski was wearing a striking black and white patterned shirt. “Oh yes, the famous shirt. It was a long time ago. It was 1992,” Skulski recalled. “Then I’ll try again to ask questions that might also be of interest to the audience,” the reporter continued before turning to Kovač.
At the end of the interview, Skulski addressed Kovač directly: “Niko, I’ll spare you the 2-0 win by Bayern and Jobe Bellingham’s faux pas. Thank you very much.” Kovač replied briefly: “All right,” both shook hands. Then the trainer wished the reporter: “All the best. Good pension, good pension and a nice, relaxed life.” Skulski took it with humor: “I’ll do something else. Thank you. Bye.”
The 66-year-old has worked as a reporter and presenter in the ZDF sports department since 1992. His active career ended with the interview after the Dortmund game against Bayern.
