As if the devil is playing with it, Zandvoorter Yvonne Dijkman suddenly thought yesterday morning: “When would it happen again?”

Well, that same evening it was ‘again ball’. Above Zandvoort so much rain fell that the water in some streets was forty to fifty centimeters high. “It was just the Rio Grande,” she says, pointing to the street.

Here, on the corner of Jan Steenstraat and Van Ostadestraat, one neighbor is cleaning the corridor, the other is working the sewage water from her bedroom. In the meantime they know the procedure: “If you smell the sewer system during a mood, we will put the wooden shot in front of the front door and some towels. Then we wait.”

It went wrong in various places. The fire brigade pulled out about ten times, including for flooding in homes. The sewer system also clogged through the cluster shower, resulting in shit on the sidewalk.

De Kom van Zandvoort

Zandvoorters are no longer afraid of one flood. Because part of the village is a lot lower than the boulevard, the water always flows towards Koningsstraat and Van Ostadestraat. For residents, those streets are also known as ‘De Kom van Zandvoort’.
