Youth shelter of Rino in Bavel has to leave: ‘I am devastated’

Rino Driessen has to leave the building on the Woestenbergseweg in Bavel with his youth shelter Ariba within two weeks. The court announced this on Friday. The municipality of Breda, owner and lessor of the land, wants to use the site for something else.

Sadness and anger were the mixed emotions when Rino heard the news from his lawyer. He has not yet dared to tell his clients, young people with a mild intellectual disability.

“They just bug us in the street.”

“I have to take care of them,” says a crying Rino. “But they just bug us in the street. I didn’t expect this and I don’t even know why the judge decided this. I still have to hear that from my lawyer.”

The man has had a conflict with the municipality of Breda about the plot in Bavel for some time. He claims that he has been promised that he can work and live there until there are concrete plans for the development of the site. The judge ruled otherwise in May. Rino had to leave the building on 1 September.

He refused, after which an eviction procedure was started. That’s why there was a new court process two weeks ago, with the verdict on Friday.

“I am devastated,” he continues. “But I won’t let this rest. I’ll help them destroy the house. I’ll sew everything out and make sure it’s no use to anyone. Then I’ll run away.”

“The municipality doesn’t even know what they want to do with the land yet.”

“That this is possible in the Netherlands is unbelievable,” he continues. “The municipality does not even know what they want to do with the land. I am just standing on the street for nothing. Hopefully I can still stretch it and I can still appeal. My lawyer is now looking into that.”

According to lawyer Wim Vos, he has only heard the verdict from the court and the substantiation will follow later.
