Youth Olympic Games: Following in mom’s footsteps: Romy Ertl wins combined bronze

The young Alpine athletes won at the Youth Olympic Games in South Korea: After Benno Brandis’ gold in the Super-G, Romy Ertl won bronze in the Alpine combination on Monday (January 22, 2024).

Glorious start for the German Alpine team at the Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon: There were medals to celebrate on the first two days of competition.

Bronze for Romy Ertl

On Monday morning, 16-year-old Romy Ertl won bronze in the Alpine combined and thus the second medal for the German Alpine team. The daughter of the successful skier Martina Ertl only had to admit defeat to the Austrian Maja Waroschitz and the Italian Giorgia Collomb. In the end, Ertl was 0.86 seconds slower than gold medalist Waroschitz. Antonia Reischl from SC Partenkirchen also did well, coming seventh.

The now 50-year-old Martina Ertl won three Olympic medals, became world champion twice and German champion several times. In 1996 and 1998 she won the small crystal ball for the best giant slalom skier. Ertl won 14 World Cup races in three different disciplines and was one of the most successful German ski racers.

Brandis takes gold in the Super-G

Benno Brandis, the 17-year-old from TSV Durach, had previously won gold in the Super-G. His teammates Leo Scherer and Lars Horvath finished 14th and 23rd.

Youth Olympic Games

The games last until February 1st. There are 81 decisions pending in 15 sports. The German Olympic Sports Confederation has sent 90 athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 to Asia; a total of 78 nations are represented.
