Theater production is more than just one performance. Prior to the performances, young people talk to the elderly who have experienced the war. Also with the second generation, which often has special stories to tell. A performance is made based on those conversations, and in collaborations with theater makers and musicians. This national project is being carried out in forty places throughout the Netherlands, on 4 May at 9 p.m.
“What it will be exactly, that depends on the young,” Haan explains. How the project originated is clear: the Damschreeuwer who disturbed the national commemoration on Dam Square in Amsterdam in 2010 made the ball roll.
Necessary
Haan: “We thought: how is this possible and we should not pay more attention to national commemoration? The project has grown in 2025 to 55 youth performances throughout the country.
“We want the stories to live, but also that the stories in the present time get a place. It is more important than ever and necessary that young people are also aware of this.”
Haan thinks the whole process is the most special. “The moment people start a conversation one-on-one, you see that the need for young people is fueled. It’s great to see that.”
‘As much as possible’
Last year Haan made a call at NH Radio: whether there were elderly people who wanted to tell their story. Now she is mainly looking for young people. “As much as possible,” says Haan. The only condition: the rehearsals are on Wednesday evening, you have to be able to be there.
Other creative people such as musicians can also register. And special war stories, they are still very welcome. Do you not live in Alkmaar? The project is organized in several areas of North Holland, where young people are also being sought. The first rehearsal evening is on March 12.
