Christian Nana from the Work Heart Make Art (WHMA) foundation is one of the initiators of the art workshop ‘MEROÏR’ in the Maria Chapel in Hoorn. According to him, young people are the future and their view of the neighborhood is important. “It’s nice to know how they view their own neighborhood, so we can see if we are leaving a positive influence.”

Neighborhood with a bad name

The Kersenboogerd district does not have a good reputation. Recently, no fewer than three shootings took place in one evening. Positivity in the neighborhood can be a step towards overturning that image. “We create new, positive stories with the young people. That is something we can all use, including in the Kersenboogerd,” says Nana.

Sepp (15) also recognizes the negative image, but thinks it is unjustified. “You hear negative things about different parts of the neighborhood. People who live there are just themselves, but are still judged that way. I don’t think that’s okay.”
