Young people get vaccinated against HPV virus: ‘If it doesn’t help, it won’t hurt’

At the GGD location on Swedenweg in Assen, young people between the ages of 18 and 26 were able to get an HPV vaccination free of charge and without an appointment this morning. It is a catch-up campaign. 43,000 young people in Drenthe have received an invitation to get vaccinated.

“The catch-up is that young people between the ages of 18 and 26 can get this vaccine. Normally they receive the vaccine at the age of 10. But the Health Council has indicated that there are also health gains to be made for this group. So it is quite special because it falls outside the normal category from zero to 18 years old,” says GGD doctor Jac Korsten.

There was no storm this morning. Perhaps young people prefer to stay in bed on Saturday mornings? “Some students might. But you can see that there are some students walking around. We are in Assen this morning and in Emmen this afternoon. So it is also possible to get a vaccination at a later time,” says Korsten, who indicates that he had hoped for a somewhat higher turnout.
