King’s Day isn’t until tomorrow, but as always, the day before there is already a lot of crowds in the Burgemeester in ‘t Veldpark in Zaandam. At 11 am the first sellers had already put down their clothes, but in the evening it got really busy. Most visitors here know: the real gems can already be found today.

Business is going well for a couple. Their daughter is on the rug next to it and is also constantly busy with interested people for her pottery. “You must have beautiful things, then you will lose it,” the saleswoman reveals. “You can also get a lot of stuff here for an affordable price. If I still have something, I’ll go and stand with my daughter in the morning. I think it’s nice around 12:00. Then I’ll have a look myself.”

Tents can be seen in various places: those people are fanatic and some even sleep in the park at night to secure their spot for the next day. A lady with a beautiful decoration in her hair doesn’t feel like that much. She has many books on her rug. “I haven’t read them all myself,” she laughs. Her daughter enjoyed being on the free market today. When they can get to their clothes again by car, they pack again.

Another lady with a Polish accent has just made a big hit. “That’s right!” she says enthusiastically. “Dolls and toys for my grandchildren.” She also shows a painting with a cheetah: “It’s for me! I come here every year. I’ll be back early tomorrow morning too.”

It was not only busy in Zaandam: you could also walk over the heads in Krommenie this afternoon.
