Does the strict dress code allow male guests to wear sneakers or otherwise bring out their personal style? The expert gives his real opinion.

The dress code for castle parties doesn’t give men much room for living. According to etiquette, men should arrive at the Independence Day reception in either a tailcoat or a dark suit.
– A dark suit gives more opportunities to bring out your own personality. You can choose it in black or dark blue, which is more distinctive. For the suit, you can choose, for example, a fabric with a woven texture, such as a herringbone pattern. For example, different collar turns can make an outfit look spectacular, says the CEO of the Schoffa brand, which specializes in custom-made men’s clothing Anton Koivisto.
Koivisto especially praises Arthur Borges’ outfit from the 2015 Linna party. The suit is by Tom Ford. Pasi Liesimaa/IL
Stylist Vesa Silver also believes that tailcoats will also be seen in Linna in colors other than the familiar black.
A men’s jacket can be, for example, double-breasted, the suit ensemble can also be three-piece with a vest. Koivisto does not recommend playing with the color of your shirt – you should wear a white or cream-white shirt to Linna’s party. You can choose a tie with a special, for example, grenadine weave. The best choice for shoes is a black oxford shoe. The wilder chooses a luxurious loafer.
– I would leave the antics and the funniest colors for other occasions, Koivisto states.

Koivisto assures that you can’t go wrong with a classic ensemble. Even a formal dark suit is special when it is cut correctly and fits well, made of good fabric and the details have been thought through to the end. Details like special buttons on a shirt or suit can make you stand out.
– For the castle celebrations, you should dress respectfully of the occasion, Koivisto says and continues:
– In general, I think the dressing at Linna’s parties is averagely good and reflects the Finnish soulscape. Of course, there could be more festive ensembles and fabrics, stylish jewelry and well-polished shoes.
In Koivisto’s opinion, the most regrettable violation of etiquette is often related to underdressing. Some go to Linnaa in clothes that are too casual, for example in a gray business suit familiar from working life. You shouldn’t fuss with the color of your shirt or tie either.
– There are no finer parties in Finland than these, so why not dress in your best if you get invited?, Koivisto asks.
In Koivisto’s opinion, overdoing the outfit and underdressing at the same time is a challenging combination. In sneakers, Koivisto never recommends heading to Linna’s party – if you have to break etiquette, then wear velvet loafers or suede oxford shoes.
– I would rather wear a perfect dark suit and add something extra to it that would make everyone think, wow! If the outfit is otherwise completely in accordance with the label, then maybe you could go crazy, says Koivisto.
Every year, the etiquette of the Castle’s parties is stretched. How do you think these five partygoers did?
