Izzy P. (32) from Tilburg, who stabbed his housemate Yke Engel to death, has to go to prison for six years and receive a TBS with compulsory treatment. The court in Den Bosch decided this on Monday. The court does not follow the advice of the psychiatrist and psychologist to declare the suspect completely incompetent, but does consider him to be of reduced accountability.
The suspect had appealed against the six-year prison sentence and TBS with compulsory treatment that the court in Breda imposed on him in 2023.
Izzy killed his housemate Yke with 38 stab wounds on October 18, 2022. He did this in her own house on Bisschop Godschalkstraat in Tilburg. Izzy temporarily lived with Yke and her son, because he suffered from delusions, schizophrenia and psychosis. His mental problems were exacerbated by the use of cannabis and hashish.
During the hearing two weeks ago, the court asked Izzy whether he knew what he was doing when he killed Yke. “What I can remember is that I stabbed once and that Yke shouted ‘no’. I don’t remember the rest,” he said at the time.

The court declared Izzy not completely incompetent because he voluntarily and consciously took drugs before the fatal day. He knew what the risks could be.
Izzy had previously suffered from psychosis due to smoking cannabis. That is why the court accuses him of ‘having started using cannabis again with all the consequences that entails’. Due to Izzy’s psychiatric disorder, the court determines that he is less accountable.
Izzy receives a prison sentence of six years minus three months’ pre-trial detention for manslaughter. This is followed by TBS with compulsory treatment.
The psychologist’s report and other experts show that Izzy can be aggressive and violent when he is psychotically disturbed. Izzy will remain sensitive to this his entire life. That is why the court opts for compulsory treatment, because ‘that offers society the most protection’.
