For assaulting his ex-partner, a 39-year-old man from Hoogeveen should receive a prison sentence of one year, of which half a year is conditional. The woman was allegedly intensively stalked for two months from May last year.
The relationship had ended. Because of their shared child, they would continue to be friendly with each other. The suspect was unable to do this. He sent the woman increasingly threatening messages or called her frequently. Even after a bouquet of flowers with thousands of apologies, the man again showed up through the messages.
An attempt was made to change the man’s mind through an interview on May 5. The woman continued to receive messages that were rude in tone. “Outright death threats,” the prosecutor said. The woman eventually received emails from other women who were concerned about her parenting style.
The suspect turned out to be hidden behind these emails ‘from third parties’. He admitted to the judge that he sent those fake emails. The Hoogevener spent 127 days in pre-trial detention and now lives temporarily in Emmen. He keeps all agreements and says he wants to give his life new impetus. The prosecutor doubts this: “This seems like a calculated attitude.”
The suspect has been psychologically examined and is struggling with a personality disorder and trauma from the past. He wants to cooperate in everything, the suspect’s lawyer pleaded. In order not to thwart this positive turn of events, she suggested not to send the thirty-something man back to prison again.
The public prosecutor does not share that opinion. The suspect has also previously been convicted of stalking after the termination of another relationship. The prosecutor believes that the man should also be subject to a contact and location ban.
The verdict is March 12.
