Y2K trend blossoms in denim street style

With the Kingpins denim trade show in Amsterdam and some new denim collections such as the return of the Moschino Jeans line and the collaboration between G-Star Raw and model Rose Bertram, there was a strong focus on fabric in October.

Denim was also heavily featured on the SS23 runways, including at Givenchy, Diesel and Balenciaga. But the industry once again showed its love for denim on the street. FashionUnited took a look at the fashion weeks in Milan, Paris and Copenhagen. It became clear: the Y2K trend has definitely arrived.

denim shimmer

The first glimmer on the denim horizon heralds the return of the ’00s. Jeans with a metallic look, whether in classic denim blue, black or with the full radiance of silver, are back.

The style can be canadian tuxedo (Denim from top to bottom) as well as combine it with other pieces as a top or bottom. Pieces in a matching Y2K color palette in tones such as pink and baby blue provide even more spotlight.

camouflage

This color palette can also be seen in camouflage denim pants. Although some simpler models with shades of gray could also be discovered, the trend seems friendlier overall than the classic military look with green and brown, as seen with the men in Milan and Florence.

The camouflage jeans are combined with tops that take up the colors again and bring a certain casualness with them, such as long coats and wide sweaters. Short jackets and crop tops, on the other hand, together with the mostly wide trousers, allow an exciting play with the silhouette.

Denim mix

The mix with other fabrics and different jeans elements provides even more variety in jeans. The material mix spices up the classic jeans and can create different effects and styles depending on the application, including the cowboy version with an insert on the buttocks. But the application of a thinner fabric at the seams also creates an exciting effect that makes the look appear more two-dimensional.

Short denim skirts and shorts

Also visible, or rather almost invisible, were the denim skirts, which were becoming shorter again. Whether in a punk style – dyed and with a rivet belt – or something more casual in combination with a long-sleeved top, the possibilities are wide-ranging.

As an alternative to the skirt, mini shorts were also seen, which were combined with tight-fitting pieces. Including a sporty denim jacket and a shirt with a tank top.

boxer shorts

The trend that follows is less related to the jeans themselves and more to the way they are worn. In womenswear, the thong was made visible again in recent seasons and brought back this trend of the noughties. Now the trousers in menswear are slipping down again and showing the boxer shorts.

There are basically two types, one that is a bit more body-hugging with tight-fitting boxer shorts with an elastic band and the more casual version with a bulging socket.

Whether with tight jeans or baggy pants, the tight boxer shorts can be combined well with a short top to focus on the lower half of the body. In the casual version, the pants are either so low that the boxer shorts are visible without further styling, or the underwear is pulled a little higher so that the top can be tucked in visibly.
