As expected, Chinese President Xi Jinping has been re-elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, the country’s most powerful position. With that he will become leader of China for a third term of five years, which heralds a break with tradition: it was the norm for party leaders to resign after a maximum of two terms. Xi was also reappointed as head of the Central Military Committee.
