WTA Finals: Pegula in the final

The title at the tournament for the best tennis players of the year will only be awarded on Monday instead of on Sunday as planned.

Because of rain, world number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and Iga Swiatek had to abandon their semi-final at the WTA Finals in Cancún when the score was 2-1 in the first set for the Pole.

Both top stars sat wrapped in towels under umbrellas on the pitch, but the wait was in vain. The semi-finals are now scheduled to end on Sunday. The players had complained several times about the poor conditions in Mexico, such as too few and poor training pitches.

Pegula first finalist

Jessica Pegula was the first player to reach the final. The 29-year-old defeated her American doubles partner Coco Gauff 6:2, 6:1 in one hour in the semifinals.

Due to the constant rain, Laura Siegemund was still unable to finish her doubles match with the Russian Vera Swonarewa against Gauff and Pegula. The game had already been abandoned on Friday when the score was 3:6, 1:1 from Siegemund and Swonarewa’s point of view, both still have a chance of reaching the semi-finals.
