After his round of 16 coup at the 2025 Darts World Cup against defending champion Luke Humphries, Peter Wright had to shed a few tears on stage. Why, “Snakebite” didn’t want to reveal this secret afterwards.
“It’s none of your business,” Peter Wright told the journalists present at the post-match press conference, referring to the scene that led to his emotional outburst: a heartfelt conversation with defeated opponent Luke Humphries.
“He’s such a gentleman. He’s also a great, great guy outside of darts. A nice family man. Fantastic darts player. He had some really nice words to say to me,” enthused the Scot about the champion, who was dethroned surprisingly early.
Wright continued: “I told him he’s a fantastic world champion. He’s done a fantastic job all year. He’s put darts on the map.”
Darts World Cup 2025: “No animosity” between Wright and Humphries
These hymns of praise from the 54-year-old veteran for “Cool Hand Luke” were quite surprising, as both had previously fought a long-distance verbal duel.
Wright had predicted an even earlier exit from the World Cup for Humphries. He hit back and etched, among other things: “I think Peter loves to play mind games, but it doesn’t work for me. I’m one world championship away from matching his career and I’m about 25 years younger.”
After winning the duel against Humphries, Wright wanted nothing more to do with a conflict. “I watched the interviews. They’re all funny, aren’t they? I knew what was coming. You ask stupid questions, we give stupid answers. He didn’t stab me in the back or anything. He just answered the questions that you asked and that’s it. I have no animosity or anything against Luke.”
