Copenhagen (AP) – The former world number one Caroline Wozniacki said goodbye to the big tennis stage with a final showdown with Germany’s number one Angelique Kerber.

In her farewell match against her longtime German companion, the 31-year-old Dane won 7:5, 6:4 in Copenhagen’s Royal Arena. In front of around 10,000 spectators, she showed that more than two years after her last match on the WTA tour, she can still play tennis at the top level.

The best tennis player in Danish history had already played her last official game at the Australian Open 2020. Their farewell match in front of a home crowd had to be postponed twice because of the corona pandemic. The 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams was originally planned as an opponent for the show fight, but in late summer 2021 the organizers announced that Kerber would play against Wozniacki.
