The German national basketball team will land in Frankfurt on Tuesday morning and then celebrate their World Cup triumph together with the fans. At the request of the world champions, however, not on the Römer.
On Tuesday morning at 8:50 a.m., the newly crowned basketball world champions will set foot on German soil again for the first time after their coup in Manila. The national basketball team, which secured the World Cup title for the first time in history on Sunday in the Philippines, will land in Frankfurt after a long night of partying and an even longer return flight and then continue the partying. As is often the case at such big events, Frankfurt will welcome the sports heroes.
Unlike, for example, the World Cup title for footballers in 1990, second place at the European Championship for women’s footballers in 2022 or of course the great successes of Eintracht Frankfurt in recent years, the basketball players will not present themselves to the fans on the Roman balcony. The official title celebration takes place in front of the headquarters of the main sponsor ING Diba in downtown Frankfurt. So one size smaller.
Mayor Josef receives the team
But it is by no means the case that the city supports the team around captain Dennis Schröder and head coach Gordon Herbert, who once led the Skyliners to the BBL championship title, didn’t want to see it on the infamous balcony. On the contrary: “You would have been welcome to come,” a spokeswoman told hr-sport. The DBB selection would have preferred the party, which is now taking place near the festival hall, just as much. “That’s absolutely okay, of course.”
Mayor Mike Josef (SPD) will welcome the victorious team on site, which includes former Skyliners professional Isaac Bonga and current Skyliners assistant coach Klaus Perwas, two other players with direct connections to Frankfurt. After a few official words, the team will then appear on a stage provided and then also sign autographs, as the German Basketball Association announced: “All fans are warmly invited.”
