Sydney Matilda Lohmann – even the national player’s first name is a good omen for the DFB team at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. “Australian Shepherd at home, Sydney Lohmann in the team – more signs are not possible”, says Lena Oberdorf.

For the German soccer women, the countdown to the World Cup mission from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand is on. The final phase of preparation is currently taking off in Herzogenaurach, Franconia.

In order to get the title in the DFB quarter but not only the “ghost of Herzogenaurach” summoned. Before the tournament, the role of a lucky charm for the German team was given to Sydney Lohmann – the 23-year-old not only fits the profile perfectly because of her first name.

Lohmann: “I needed a second name”

At a DFB press conference at the training camp in Herzogenaurach, Franconia, the midfielder from FC Bayern Munich referred to another peculiarity. “My mom and dad said: tell the story of your second name,” said Lohmann on Monday. “Well, Sydney isn’t clearly a boy’s or girl’s name. I needed a second name: and that’s Matilda.”

“Down Under” the “Matildas” are waiting

“Matildas” are called the Australian national players. “So here’s some new information,” said Lohmann with a smile. The 23-year-old is part of the 29-man squad headed by national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August 20). The 23 World Cup participants will be announced after the last test match of the runners-up European champions next Friday (8:30 p.m./ARD) in Fürth against Zambia.

The “Australian Shepherd” is waiting

How Lohmann got her first name has been known for a long time. Before she was born, her parents were on a trip around the world, including in the Australian metropolis of Sydney. And one more detail surprised: Lohmann’s teammate Lena Oberdorf (VfL Wolfsburg) also referred to her family dog, whose breed has a connection to the country of the World Cup host: “Australian Shepherd at home, Sydney Lohmann in the team – more signs are not possible.”
