Along with Lennart Karl, Tom Bischof is one of the heroes of Munich’s comeback in Freiburg – his brace ushered in the late 3-2 win. Will Bischof still get the World Cup ticket from national coach Julian Nagelsmann?
FC Bayern struggled for a long time against SC Freiburg without star striker Harry Kane and chased a 2-0 deficit – before Tom Bischof brought the record champions back into the game with his brace. Youngster Lennart Karl secured Munich’s narrow 3-2 win with his last-minute goal.
The ailing striker Kane celebrated FC Bayern’s spectacular victory in Freiburg. “Wow, wow, wow,” the striker commented on his football colleagues’ spectacular 3-2 win on the “Cleats Club” app: “I love this team.”
Announcement from Kimmich: “Can you shoot at the box?”
Bischof was all smiles after the final whistle. “The goals felt great,” said the 20-year-old after his brace. “I could do something like that more often.”
Bischof, who moved from TSG Hoffenheim to Isar last summer, has not yet appeared as a goalscorer. The goals in Freiburg were his first for Munich – and were apparently on the cards. “Before the game, Jo said to me: Can you please shoot at the box now?”, Bischof reported on a conversation with midfielder Joshua Kimmich on DAZN. He’s often shot at goal in training, but he hasn’t managed to do so in a game yet. “Now I just did it – and it worked.”
Praise from a colleague: Kimmich raves about Bischof’s mentality
Kimmich later said he was “extremely happy” for his young colleague. Bischof “rewarded” himself with the double pack – even after the small setback during the international break. “Another person might have been disappointed that he wasn’t part of the senior national team. Tom has a different character, goes to the U21 and wants to get the most out of it. This attitude and mentality sets him apart,” Kimmich praised his teammate.
World Cup dream lives on
With his two goals, Bischof has already recommended himself to the national coach, but he will have to work harder in the remaining weeks of the season if Julian Nagelsmann wants to continue to impress. He has not yet given up hope of taking part in the World Cup in the summer. “I’m open and would be happy if I were there. That’s what I’m working towards,” said Bischof. “If you perform well at Bayern, you have good chances. That’s why I haven’t booked a vacation yet.” Bischof had played his only game so far for Nagelsmann’s team in the Nations League game against France (0-2) in June 2025.
