Since the beginning of April, Mats Hummels has not been on the pitch for Roma. On the last matchday of the season, he was allowed to go in the final minutes.
Mats Hummels’ career is officially ended. The German soccer world champion came back to a short assignment in the last game of his AS Rome. He was substituted in the 90th minute at the stand of 2-0 against FC Turin.
He no longer had many actions in the three minutes of added time he was allowed to contest. However, Hummels still had a special moment. His teammates celebrated him, threw him in the air and caught him again.
For the Roma, the remote duel with Juventus Turin was still about the Champions League qualification, which is why coach Claudio Ranieri wanted to offer his best team. However, Hummels no longer belonged to the Hummels, which is why he first found himself on the bench when he said goodbye.
The Roma won her game at FC Turin, but it was not enough for the Champions League. Because Juventus won 3-2 at Kellkind Venice and thus secured fourth place in the table. Kenan Yildiz (25th minute), Randal Kolo Muani (31st) and Manuel Locatelli (73./Foulelfmeter) scored the goals for Juve.
SSC Naples secured the championship on Friday evening ahead of Inter Milan. In addition to these three clubs, Atalanta Bergamo is also qualified for the Champions League. Just like the AC Monza, it also catches Venice and FC Empoli in the relegation battle.
For Rome it goes to the Europa League, but without Mats Hummels, who ends in professional football after over 18 years. In the ZDF documentary “Hummels-La Finale. With Tommi Schmitt” Hummels had revealed that he was prepared for the moment as one could be on the end of a phase of life.
