The logistics center of the mail order company Amazon in Achim near Bremen was the second in northern Germany to elect a works council. This strengthens the right of co-determination for the 2,000 employees vis-à-vis the local management, said the Verdi union. One now wants to take care of the fixed-term contracts, about which there have been many complaints in the past. Amazon also paid little attention to the bad bus connection to the train station.

In the north, the Amazon shipping center in Winsen near Hamburg also has a works council. At Amazon in Achim, Verdi representatives won the majority of the votes, the union said. The employer did not make it easy to set up an employee representative body for the new center on the A27 motorway.

The company disagreed: “We also supported the initiative at the Achim site,” said a spokesman on Tuesday. There was a high turnout in the election. “At Amazon, there are elected works councils at all established logistics centers in Germany, with which the respective site managers work well and trustingly.” (dpa)
