Women’s Volleyball Champions League: Conegliano overwhelmed by Fenerbahce

In the first leg of the quarterfinals in Istanbul, the Italian champions lost 3-0. Return home next Thursday

FENERBAHÇE-CONEGLIANO 3-0
(25-19, 25-17, 25-19)

Conegliano’s race to the Champions League becomes complicated, as he suffers a heavy defeat, especially in the game before scoring. Fenerbahçe won their first match against the panthers, playing a perfect match and imposing their physicality in all fundamentals.

The match

Santarelli lines up Wolosz, Haak, De Kruijf, Squarcini, Plummer, Robinson-Cook and De Gennaro. Terzic replies with Macris, Vargas, Erdem, Vuchkova, Ana Cristina, Fedorovtseva and Orge. The block and the physicality in attack immediately push the landlords forward (8-4). The Panthers force unsuccessfully to serve and make serious mistakes in attack (17-9). The change of the diagonal with Carraro and Samedy yields a comeback that Squarcini and Robinson-Cook lead up to 20-17. Three other errors, however, give the set to Vader. Conegliano fails to play, the Turks grow in confidence and make very few mistakes, imposing themselves in terms of pace, resourcefulness and precision. The Panthers collapsed on a sequence of 5 consecutive points by Fedorovtseva which widens the score from 7-7 to 13-7. After two sets Haak is still at 6 points, the young Russian is already at 15, the overall aces are 6 against 1. Fenerbahçe remains merciless and effective, unlike Conegliano, who remains in the hole from which he can’t get out. Santarelli does not find solutions even from the substitutions and is unable to bring the team back to the game level. The score is never in question and now we need a feat like that of the 2019 golden set against Eczacibasi.
