The Werder Bremen footballers achieved a new attendance record in the northern derby against HSV. More than 31,000 fans watch the game in the Weserstadion.

The Werder Bremen footballers set a new attendance record in the Weserstadion in the northern derby against Hamburger SV (Saturday, 5:45 p.m.). More than 31,000 tickets were sold for the game, surpassing the previous record of 22,721 spectators.

Werder coach Friederike Kromp was enthusiastic about the fans’ interest in the run-up to the game. She explained that the largest crowd she had ever seen was at a European Championship final in Borisov with 15,000 spectators and that the upcoming game was new territory for her.

The game will be broadcast by ARD on free-to-air television. It was said that the decision to show the northern derby instead of the top game between VfL Wolfsburg and FC Bayern Munich, which was also taking place, highlighted the special status of the derby.

The two teams had already played in the DFB Cup semi-finals in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion in March of this year in front of 57,000 spectators, which at the time was a record for German women’s football at club level. However, this number was exceeded with 57,762 spectators on the first matchday of the current Bundesliga season at the game between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.
