Paula Tomás was actually considered an up-and-coming player and even played for Spain. But an injury slows the defender down.
Paula Tomás ends her career at just 24 years old. The Spanish national soccer player announced this on Instagram. “I always joked about it, but it was never serious. Today, however, it is. It was not an easy decision; quite the opposite. An era of my life is coming to an end, a part of me, of what I am and who I am,” Tomás wrote on Instagram.
The reason for the retirement is a long-term knee injury. “My body has signaled to me that I have to stop, and so I have to – almost forced – prioritize my health and say goodbye to what I enjoy,” explained the 24-year-old.
Paula Tomás comes from near Valencia in eastern Spain. She made the jump to England via UD Levante and signed with Aston Villa in the summer of 2024. However, the left-back has not been on the pitch since December last year due to injury – and will not be returning there.
Villa’s sporting director of women’s football, Marisa Ewers, shared: “Paula has been a valued member of the team during her time here. She brought real energy every day, both on and off the pitch, and although we will miss her at the club, we wish her all the best for her future.”
What will happen next for Paula Tomás is still unclear. “Now I’m starting a new life. I hope I’ll be half as good as this one,” she wrote on Instagram. “I was very lucky with everything I experienced and especially with the person I experienced it with.”
